HP’s Omen series of laptops is really their only dedicated laptop series for gamers. Some of their Pavilion series laptops have gaming-oriented hardware configurations, but are better-suited for budget-oriented buyers (as you’ll see further down in this post.) But, if you want a serious gaming laptop from HP, you’ll want to check out their Omen edition options, which come in a wide array of configurations.

This HP Omen laptop version comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, 32GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a secondary 2TB SSD. It also sports a 15.6-inch 1080P display that has a 144Hz refresh rate. And, it comes in at just over $2,000.

In terms of in-game performance, you can expect this HP Omen laptop to easily handle anything you throw at it. The RTX 3070 GPU is almost overkill for a 1080P display, but since the screen has a 144Hz refresh rate, the higher framerate you’ll get from the RTX 3070 will work well with the display.

Ultimately, this HP Omen model offers a good mix of hardware for the price and is a worthy option to consider if you have a budget of around ~$2,000.

2. HP OMEN 5900HX

A more extreme Ryzen HP gaming laptop

  • NVIDIA RTX 3070
  • 1080P / 144Hz
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM

If you like the laptop option above, but you’d like an even better processor, this HP Omen configuration might suit your better. Like the model listed above, this Omen laptop comes with an RTX 3070 GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 15.6-inch 1080P 144Hz display.

However, where the previous model came with a Ryzen 7 5800H processor, this model comes with the more extreme Ryzen 9 5900HX processor. And, while the 5900HX probably won’t offer a significant advantage in in-game scenarios, if you’re looking to do more with your laptop than just game—and, more specifically, CPU-intensive tasks—the extra CPU power might be worth it for the price increase.

In the end, though, if gaming is your primary concern, the HP Omen model listed above will work just as well for nearly ~$400 less. So, if you don’t absolutely need the extra CPU power, you would probably be best off opting for the option listed above.

3. HP OMEN 17

The best 17-inch HP gaming laptop

OMEN 17 Gaming Laptop NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
  • Intel i7-10750H
  • NVIDIA RTX 3070
  • 1080P / 144Hz
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM

If you prefer a larger 17.3-inch display over the standard 15.6-inch display, this HP Omen 17 edition laptop is probably what you’re looking for. It doesn’t come with the extreme Ryzen 9 CPU that the laptop listed above comes with, but its newer Intel Core i7 processor is a solid alternative.

At just under ~$1,800, this HP Omen 17 laptop comes with an Intel Core i7-11800H, 16GB of memory, an RTX 3070 GPU, and a 512GB SSD. It’s 17.3-inch screen sports a 1080P resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate.

Considering that this HP Omen 17 laptop comes in at a lower price than the two options above, has a similar hardware configuration, and comes with the bigger display, it’s hard to not recommend it as the best option of the three.

However, this laptop is appears to be a newer configuration from HP as the ship time on it is currently 1-2 months on Amazon. So, if you need something right now, this probably isn’t the right option for you. If you don’t mind waiting in order to get a better deal, this HP Omen gaming laptop is probably your best bet in relation to the two options listed above.

4. HP Pavilion 4800H

A nice mid-range HP gaming laptop

HP Pavilion 15.6 FHD Gaming Laptop
  • Ryzen 7 4800H
  • GTX 1660 Ti
  • 1080P / 60Hz
  • 12GB DDR4 RAM

For those that are looking to spend ~$1,000 on a gaming laptop, this HP Pavilion model is worth a look. It does have slightly older hardware, but for the price it is a solid configuration.

It comes with an older Ryzen 7 4800H processor, 12GB of RAM, a GTX 1660 Ti GPU, and a 512GB SSD. It also has a 15.6-inch 1080P display that has a 60Hz refresh rate.

All-in-all, that configuration of hardware will result in solid in-game performance. However, the lack of a 144Hz display and the slightly older hardware aren’t ideal—especially when you consider that there are some laptop options from competitors (namely, the ASUS TUF Dash 15 and the Acer Nitro 5 54-77KG) that offer better hardware for a similar or lower price.

So, unless the price comes down on this laptop, or you just absolutely love HP products, we’d recommend passing on this option for now.

5. HP Pavilion 4600H

The best budget Acer gaming laptop

HP - Pavilion 15.6 AMD Ryzen Gaming Laptop
  • Ryzen 5 4600H
  • NVIDIA GTX 1650
  • 1080P / 60Hz
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM

If you’re on a tight budget, this ~$750 HP Pavilion laptop is a decent option for that will serve well as an entry-level gaming system. It comes with an older Ryzen 5 4600H processor, an NVIDIA GTX 1650 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It also has a 15.6-inch 1080P display with a 60Hz refresh rate.

That’s pretty common hardware configuration for a gaming laptop in this price range.

Although, if you’ve got another ~$100-$200 to spend, there are some better alternatives from the competition. For instance, the ASUS TUF Dash 15 (~$950) comes with a better processor, better GPU, double the SSD capacity, and a 144Hz display. And, the same goes for the Acer Nitro 5 55-53E5 (~$840).

In our opinion, if you can stretch the budget to get either of those options, you’ll end up with a much better overall gaming experience.

Which HP Gaming Laptop is Best for You?

While HP doesn’t quite offer the same array of gaming laptop configurations as companies like ASUS or MSI, they still produce a lot of quality gaming laptops. And, one thing I’ve noticed from HP is that they take a bit longer to get the newest generation of laptop CPU and GPU hardware into newer systems—but, when they do, they are often the most competitive options in terms of price-to-performance.

So, while at the time of writing this guide HP doesn’t offer competition to ASUS or MSI’s best options, it’s likely only a matter of time before they release more powerful configurations.
