What is a good internet speed for gaming?A good internet connection for gaming needs enough bandwidth, low latency, and consistent performance. Here’s what to look for when choosing an internet plan in 2026.

For one person playing games installed on a PC or console, 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is a sensible starting target. For a household that also streams video, takes video calls, and downloads games, 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload is a more comfortable starting point.

Those are practical shopping recommendations, not universal minimum requirements. Many online games can run on less bandwidth. Once you have enough, a stable connection with low ping usually matters more than paying for a higher download speed.

Even a powerful gaming computer can’t fix a poor network connection. But upgrading to gigabit internet won’t automatically fix lag, either. The right plan depends on whether you’re playing installed games, streaming games from the cloud, or sharing your connection with a busy household.

What Internet Speed Do You Need for Gaming?

Use these targets as a starting point when comparing plans. They include some breathing room rather than describing how much data a game constantly uses.

You don’t need to multiply 100 Mbps by the number of gamers in your home. Installed multiplayer games generally use much less bandwidth than game downloads or cloud gaming. Count the activities happening at the same time, especially video streams and large transfers. Intel’s gaming networking guide explains this distinction.

If you broadcast your gameplay, leave upload capacity beyond your stream’s configured bitrate for the game, voice chat, and other devices. Cloud gaming has its own requirements, which we’ll cover below.

Download Speed, Upload Speed, and Mbps Explained

Download speed measures how quickly data reaches your device. It affects how long games and patches take to download. Upload speed measures how quickly you send data, including game updates to a server, voice chat, and livestream video.

Internet plans usually advertise these speeds in megabits per second (Mbps). File sizes are usually measured in megabytes or gigabytes. There are eight bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps equals a theoretical 12.5 megabytes per second (MB/s), before overhead.

Here’s how long a 100 GB download would take at a constant speed, using decimal units:

These are rounded calculations, not promised download times. Server limits, Wi-Fi performance, network overhead, other household traffic, and your device’s storage and installation process can all increase the wait.

The old 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload broadband benchmark is also outdated: the FCC raised its fixed broadband benchmark to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload in 2024. That’s a broadband assessment benchmark, not a minimum required to play online.

What Is a Good Ping for Gaming?

Ping commonly refers to the round-trip time for data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better, but the server you’re connecting to matters.

Use the following as rough guidelines for installed online games, rather than strict cutoffs:

Ping to the game server What to expect
Under 20 ms Excellent for fast-paced competitive play
20–50 ms Very good for most online games
51–100 ms Often playable, with increasingly noticeable delay in fast-paced games
101–150 ms Noticeable delay; more forgiving games may still be comfortable
Over 150 ms Likely frustrating for shooters, fighting games, and other timing-sensitive play

Aim for under 50 ms when possible, especially for competitive games. There isn’t a universal maximum ping that applies to every console or game. A turn-based game can tolerate delays that would be distracting in a shooter.

Also check jitter, which is variation in latency, and packet loss, which means some data doesn’t reach its destination. Aim for consistent ping and no sustained packet loss. As Cloudflare explains, these connection-quality factors can make a higher-bandwidth connection feel worse than a slower one.

A nearby speed-test server might report 10 ms while your game reports 70 ms. Both readings can be accurate because they’re testing different destinations. Your game’s network display is more useful for judging that particular match. Network ping also isn’t the same as total input lag, which includes your controller, game processing, and display.

Do PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC Need Different Speeds?

For games running on your own hardware, start with the same practical targets whether you use a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, or a PC or Mac. The game and your household’s internet use matter more than the name on the device.

Check the specific game’s support documentation if you’re close to a bandwidth limit. Voice or video chat, screen sharing, and background updates can add to its requirements. A console’s connection test is useful for troubleshooting, but it isn’t a guarantee of performance in every game.

For Switch 2 owners, the dock includes an Ethernet port, and the console supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, according to Nintendo’s connection FAQ.

Older advice about Wii U online gaming is no longer relevant to its official multiplayer service. Nintendo discontinued online play and most other online functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024.

How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for Cloud Gaming?

Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote server and streams the picture to your device. This requires more sustained download bandwidth than playing an installed multiplayer game. Connection stability and latency are especially important because your inputs and the resulting video travel over the internet.

Here are selected provider requirements and recommendations checked in September 2026:

NVIDIA also requires network latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. Sony lists at least 5 Mbps in both directions to establish a cloud streaming session, but its higher resolution recommendations are the useful figures when planning bandwidth.

Leave room above these numbers for other devices. A 50 Mbps household connection may meet a 45 Mbps streaming requirement on paper, but offers little spare capacity. Check the service’s own network test, when available, before committing to a subscription.

Which Internet Connection Is Best for Gaming?

There are two separate choices: the service that connects your home to the internet, and the connection between your device and your router. Fiber and cable describe the first; Ethernet and Wi-Fi describe the second.

Fiber, Cable, DSL, and Fixed Wireless

Fiber is usually the first option I’d compare when it’s available at a reasonable price. Look for reliable local performance and strong upload speeds. Cable can also be excellent for gaming; check the upload allowance instead of judging a plan only by its advertised download number.

An existing DSL connection may be enough for installed online games if it meets your needs and stays stable. Fixed wireless or 5G home internet can also work, but test during the evening hours when you normally play. Local congestion, signal quality, and the route to your game’s servers can matter more than the service label.

Satellite Internet

Satellite services aren’t all alike. Traditional geostationary satellite has substantial delay because of the distance signals travel. Low-Earth-orbit services such as Starlink can deliver much lower latency and support online gaming. Starlink’s specifications also note that performance varies with location, usage, and plan. Check current local expectations and dish visibility rather than assuming all satellite connections perform the same way.

Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi

For a stationary PC or console, Ethernet is a straightforward way to avoid wireless interference. Wi-Fi can still work well when the signal is strong. Try a 5 GHz connection near the router, and compare it with Ethernet if you experience spikes or disconnects. Intel’s wired and wireless guide covers the tradeoffs.

Why Am I Lagging With Fast Internet?

If your connection has enough bandwidth, diagnose the source of the delay before buying a faster plan:

  1. Check the game’s network display. Look for ping spikes and packet loss, and choose a nearby server region when the game allows it.
  2. Compare a quiet connection with a busy one. Test when downloads and backups are paused, then test during normal household use. Repeat around your usual gaming time.
  3. Try Ethernet. If that fixes the problem, investigate Wi-Fi signal strength, placement, or interference.
  4. Check latency under load. The Waveform bufferbloat test can help reveal whether latency rises sharply during transfers.
  5. Use queue management if congestion is the problem. A router with properly configured Smart Queue Management (SQM) can reduce delays caused by excessive queuing. It may trade some peak throughput for better responsiveness.
  6. Compare multiple games. Problems limited to one title or server may be outside your home. Persistent issues across games, including over Ethernet, are useful evidence to take to your internet provider.

If the game’s frame rate drops while ping stays steady, investigate graphics settings, temperatures, or other device performance issues. A faster internet plan won’t fix low FPS in a game running on your own hardware.

Is Gigabit Internet Worth It for Gaming?

Gigabit internet can be worth paying for if you frequently download large games or share the connection with several heavy users. Its clearest benefit is shorter waits and more capacity for simultaneous activity.

For online matches, though, start with enough bandwidth for your household and focus on consistent ping, minimal jitter, and no sustained packet loss. A stable 100/20 Mbps connection is a sensible starting point for many gaming households; choose more capacity when downloads, cloud gaming, or other people actually need it.
